The film is based on the life of Gangubai Kothewali, also known as the Madam Of Kamathipura. She is known as one of the most remembered women from the history of Mumbai. Forced into prostitution into an early age, Gangubai became an influential pimp in the city and makes money off the trade but carries a soft spot for young women forced into it.
Earlier, Alia and Sanjay Leela were supposed to collaborate together with Salman Khan on Inshallah. However, the film was shelved last month.
About Inshallah being shelved, Alia Bhatt told the reporters at IIFA 2019 awards, “I was very excited to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Salman as well, I believe sometimes certain things happen which are not in your control. They say if you want to make God laugh, tell them your plans. Plans never really go ‘as per plan’ but I can give it to you in writing that I am going to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali very soon”
‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ will be Bhansali’s next film after Padmaavat which starred Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in the lead role.
