For the uninitiated, the term used by Munmun Dutta was to denote members of a Dalit caste employed in sanitation in the 19th century. Members of this caste have traditionally been restricted to sweeping, cleaning toilets, and handling dead bodies.
Soon after, Munmun Dutta issued an apology on her social media and said that she did not know the meaning of the term. In her apology, she wrote: “I have utmost respect for every single person from every caste, creed or gender and acknowledge their immense contribution to our Society or nation.”
She concluded, “I sincerely would like to apologize to every single person who has been unintentionally hurt by the usage of the word.”
