The highly infectious COVID-19 has killed 199 people in the country, with 547 fresh new cases reported in the last 24 hours. This has taken the total number of patients to 6,412 on Friday. The health ministry on Friday reported new deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the toll due to the novel coronavirus to 199, whereas, the number of cases climbed to 6,412 in the country.

The 6,412 positive cases include 5,709 active cases, the 504 who have been either cured/discharged or migrated and the 199 casualties, the health ministry reported.

The highest number of cases have been reported from Maharashtra, with 1,364 people testing positive for the novel coronavirus. that was first detected in China in December.

Maharashtra led the surge with 229 fresh cases the first time any state has reported more than 150 new cases — followed by Tamil Nadu (96), Rajasthan(80), Gujarat (76) and Delhi (51). Random coronavirus tests on patients with severe respiratory diseases are showing that more and more people with no travel or contact history are contracting the virus.

As many as 31 deaths from Covid-19 were reported from across the country, taking the pandemic’s toll in India in India to 232. These include 15 from Maharashtra and three in Delhi.

The nation is taking up a number of actions to curb the spread of the new virus that originated in China. As the period of 21-day lockdown is coming to an end, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has suggested that the lockdown will be extended and restrictions will not be lifted in one go after April 14. Several hotspots have also been singled out in cities across the country. They have been completely sealed in an effort to control the spread. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced an extension of the lockdown in the state.
