Pakistan: Blast, gunshots heard near Chinese Consulate in Karachi; 2 police officials killed

At least two police officials were killed and another injured in an attack outside the Chinese consulate in Karachi’s Clifton Block 4 on Friday.

According to a report published in Pakistan-based news channel Dawn, following an explosion the gunshots were also heard in the area. The exchange of firing is still underway.

Karachi’s Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Javed Alam Odho confirmed the death of the two policemen. He said, “Up to four gunmen tried to enter the consulate but were intercepted by security guards at a checkpoint.” “An exchange of fire resulted martyring two of our constables and critically wounding another,” he added.

The DIG further stated that one attacker was killed and a suicide jacket and weapons were recovered from his possession. “Heavy contingents of police and Rangers have been deployed to the area after an exchange of fire between a security guard and unknown assailants,” he noted.

It is to be noted that the area is considered a red zone and is already heavily guarded.

Governor Sindh Imran Ismail has taken notice of the incident and called for a report on the matter from the Sindh IGP. The governor has also contacted Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

Three terrorists have been killed so far.
