President Ram Nath Kovind appoints Ranjan Gogoi as Chief Justice

Justice Ranjan Gogoi was appointed as the next Chief Justice of India by President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday. Justice will be appointed as the 46th Chief Justice of India and is the first judge for the northeast to be appointed at this position. He will take office on October 3, a day after CJI Dipak Misra’s term ends.

Though Chief Justice Dipak Misra is scheduled to retire on October 2, but as it is a national holiday, he is retiring a day before. CJI Misra’s last working day will be on October 1. It is to be noted that the appointment comes after a week, CJI Misra officially recommended Justice Gogoi’s name as his successor.

Informing the details, the Law Ministry statement issued a notice in this regard. As per the convention, the ministry asks the current CJI about his recommendations for the next successor.

Though Justice Gogoi is known as a soft-spoken judge, but his actions speak louder. Considered a tough judge, Justice Gogoi is one of the four senior judges who spoke against the discrepancies in the roaster of the Supreme Court. He had raised concerns on CJI Misra’s method of assigning cases in the Supreme Court. After becoming the CJI, his tenure would last till November 2019.
