A fire broke out in central Mumbai at a high-rise residential building on Wednesday morning. The incident happened in the Crystal Tower which is located in the busy Parel area. Reports from NDTV suggest that residents of the building who were stuck in the top floor were rescued using a crane. Four people were charred to death and 16 injured. The fire is doused now.

An official, according to NDTV, said that the fire brigade control room had received a message about the incident at 8:32 am. The residential building is adjacent to the Hindmata Cinema in Parel. The fire has been categorised as Level 2.

According to inputs from PTI, Mumbai Fire Brigade chief PS Rahangdale said that residents were trapped in the staircases of the building as the smoke from the fire spread swiftly.

However, the cause of the fire hasn’t yet been identified. It took a total of eight fire engines along with four water tankers and the aid of the police and electrical mechanics to tame the fire and rescue the people trapped in the building.

Fourteen people had died last year in December when a fire broke out at two rooftop pubs in the Kamala Mills compound situated in central Mumbai.
