Federer beat Medvedev 6-1, 6-4 in just 64 minutes to reach his 14th final in his home event. It is also for the 12th consecutive time that Federer has made into the final at the Swiss Indoors tournament.

Federer had earlier beaten Medvedev in the first round of the Shanghai Masters earlier this month and once again he faced little difficulties at Basel as he won four match points in three games to secure the victory.

“It was a very good win for me, I’d rate it at eight out of 10. He played me tough in Shanghai,” Federer was quoted as saying by AFP following the victory. “I was feeling good on court apart from closing it out, I had a few errors there. He finished late last night and maybe his legs were a bit heavy. I was able to use my experience today.”

Meanwhile, Marius Copil became the first qualifier to reach the final of the Basel event in more than a decade after he upset Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-4 in the semi-final.

The 93rd ranked Romanian continued his giant beating spree after overcoming Zverev in a nerve-wrenching semi-final battle to add, to upset Marin Cilic in the second round earlier in the week. Copil fired as many as 26 aces in a two-hour and 33 minutes long match to advance to his only second ATP final.

“I still can’t believe I won, it’s been an unbelievable week for me,” said Copil, reported the news agency. “When I came here I was fighting to stay in the top 100. I was just hoping to win a few matches.” He added, “Now I’m in the final, it’s an unreal achievement for me. I cannot wait to play tomorrow.”

Federer will be aiming to lift his ninth title at his home event and 99th career title when the two square off for the first time in the final.
