Sunanda Pushkar death case: Tharoor appears in session court, granted bail

After political jibes and comments made by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, Congress parliamentarian from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor appeared before a court in Delhi on Saturday in connection with his wife Sunanda Pushkar ‘s death case. The bench converted Tharoor’s anticipatory bail plea to regular bail after he furnished the bail bond of Rs 1 lakh.

While granting the bail, judge had said, “it is not required to file a formal bail application as anticipatory bail had been granted by the sessions court.” Hearing the petition of Tharoor, the sessions court had granted him anticipatory bail on Thursday, with a condition that he can not go abroad without taking permission form court. Also, had ordered to furnish a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh.

Questioning the Subramanian Swamy’s locus standi in the case, Tharoor’s counsel and the prosecution opposed the applications moved by BJP leader in which he sought court’s permission to allow him to assist the prosecution in the case. Swamy had also sought a report of vigilance inquiry conducted earlier. The court has set July 26 as the next date of hearing and scrutiny of documents.

The court had summoned Congress parliamentarian from Kerala on June 5, and was asked to appear before the court on July 3.  Tharoor had filed the bail pea on July 3, which was head on July 4 and reserved for July 5 by the court. On July 5, the court granted him an anticipatory bill, with a condition that he can not fly abroad, without permission of court. On Saturday, his anticipatory bail was converted to normal bail after furnishing a bond of Rs 1 Lakh.

The Delhi Police’s SIT has charged Tharoor with sections 498A (husband or his relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as his wife – Sunanda Pushkar – was found dead in a luxury hotel room in the city on the night of January 17, 2014.
