Belgium broke the deadlock in the 58th minute after Paris Saint Germain’s Thomas Meunier set Lukaku up. The Swissmen, however, didn’t lose hope and found the equaliser soon after in the 76th minute when the quick reflexes of Mario Gavranovic, who replaced Haris Seferovic from Nico Elvedi’s header helped the ball into the back of the net after Liverpool forward Xherdan Shaqiri had sent the ball in the box through a free-kick.

Roberto Martinez’s side thus goes above Switzerland in Group A 2.Belgium put on a stellar show in Russia where they had reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by eventual champions France. They are nonetheless joint holders of the FIFA World rankings.

Gavranovic’s equaliser for Switzerland could have meant a loss of two points for Belgium but the United forward left it really late and slotted one into the net after he was involved in a one-touch move with Eden Hazard and Dries Mertens.

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany missed a chance with a score at 1-1.

But Belgium wouldn’t be able to completely enjoy this win as their defender Thomas Vermaelen sustaining a hamstring injury and was replaced by Dedryck Boyata.
