Washington D.C. shooting: 1 Dead, Several shot in US capital attack

One dead many injured in gunfire that erupted on the streets of Washington DC. The shocking incident took place quite close to the White House.

Local TV station FOX-5 reported The gunfire erupted in the Columbia Heights neighbourhood, about two miles (three km) from the White House on Thursday night about 10 p.m. Six people were shot in the incident.

In a statement to CNBC, Commander Stuart Emerman said: Units responded to the scene where we found six individuals with gunshot wounds. One of those has been pronounced deceased. The other victims have been transported to various other hospitals where the wounds range from critical to non-critical.

He further added that Police have not apprehended a suspect as of late Thursday and do not know the motive for the shooting. It is not an active shooting situation. Detectives are interviewing witnesses and looking for camera footage.

ABC affiliate WJLA-TV posted images on Twitter of ambulances carrying victims from the scene and said that there had been a “massive” police response at the intersection of 14th Street and Columbia road, about two miles (three km) from the White House.

The Police have not apprehended a suspect as of late Thursday and they also do not know the motive for the shooting. Detectives are interviewing witnesses and looking for camera footage.

Washington DC has been grappling with gun violence. As of August 23, there have been 112 murders, up 14 per cent from the same date last year, and with four months left in 2019. July witnessed one of the worst spates of shootings with 19 people found shot in five days.
