Wimbledon 2018: Serena Williams powers into thrid round; Wozniacki eliminated

Seven time-champion Serena Williams raced into the third round of Wimbledon 2018 brezzing past Bulgarian qualifier Viktoriya Tomova, 6-1, 6-4, in just 66 minutes on Wednesday.

It was the American’s 16th successive victory at the ALL England Club that dates back to 2015-16 title wins.

She missed the competition last year after giving birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia in September.

Serena, 36, was at her destructive best, smashing 24 winners and five aces, to advance to the next round.

The 25th seed will next face France’s Kristina Mladenovic or Germany’s Tatjana Maria for a last 16 berth.

Playing just her second Grand Slam as a mother, the 23rd-time major winner is one title behind equalling Margaret Court’s 24 Grand slam titles.

Wozniacki eliminated

Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki joined the exodus of stars to have existed the Wimbledon in the second round.

The second seed was beaten 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, by Russian world number 35 Ekaterina Makarova.

Surprisingly the world No. 2 has never gone beyond the fourth round in 12 appearances.

She was battling not just Makarova but also the swarm of flying of bugs that had invaded the No. 1 court on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old first complained to the umpire about the bugs and following her first set defeat had the court sprayed.

She did win the second set but was again far from her best in the third, which knocked her out.

The Dane’s loss meant five out of the top eight women’s seeds have now existed the tournament even before the third round.

“I did everything I could. It’s frustrating because I feel like I could have gone and done something really great here,” Wozniacki said later.

“I can’t even be mad at myself because I played up to the level that I can.

“She played above her level and really raised it and got a little lucky,” she added.
