Youth Olympics: Jeremy Lalrinnunga clinches India’s first ever gold medal

History was made at the hands of a certain 15-year old named Jeremy Lalrinnunga, who clinched the gold medal-India’s first at the Youth Olympics in the men’s 62 kg category in Buenos Aires on Thursday.
A world youth silver medallist, the Aizawl lad lifted a total of 274kg (120 kg +74kg) to bag the top prize on Monday.
Turkey’s Toplas Caner clinched the silver medal lifting a total of 263 kg (122 kg +141 kg) while Villar Estiven Jose settled for the bronze with a lift to 260kg (115 kg+ 143 kg).
However, this isn’t the first time that the wonderkid made a record. Earlier this year, he had won the silver medal (youth) and bronze ( junior) in the Asian Championships.
He has also set the tone for India’s best-ever finish at the Youth Olympics through his gold medal-winning effort.
Already four medals have been claimed by India in the competition so far with two silver coming from Tushar Mane and Mehuli Ghosh on Monday in the 10 m rifle shooting.
This is in stark contrast to the performance that the country put on in the last edition of the competition in China where only two medals were won- a silver and a bronze. In the inaugural edition in 2010, India won six silver medals and two bronze medals.
