Youth Olympics: Tushar Mane wins India’s first medal with a silver in 10m air rifle event

Shooter Tushar Mane bagged India’s first medal at the ongoing Youth Olympics by winning a silver in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle event at Buenos Aires on Monday.

Mane scored a total of 247.5 points to finish behind gold-medallist Grigorii Shamakov of Russia, who scored 249.2 to stand atop the podium. Aleksa Mitrovic of Serbia settled for a bronze medal with a score of 227.9 points.

It was an intriguing contest as all the three medallists fought hard in the final before Mane raced ahead of Mitrovic to clinch the silver after collecting 228 points in the second-last round 1.1 points more than the Serbian.

Earlier, Mane had shot 623.7 points to finish third in the qualifying round and advance to the final.

Meanwhile, India thrashed Bangladesh 10-0 in their opening match of the men’s Hockey 5-side competition. Vivek Sagar Prasad, Rabichandra and Sudeep scored a brace each, while Rahul Kumar, Shivam, Sanjay and Maninder netted the other goals.

Among the other events, Srihari Nataraj finished third in the qualifying round with a timing of 56.57 seconds, to advance into the semi-final of the 100m backstroke.

Tababi Devi Thangjam reached the final of the women’s Judo event after beating Croatia’s Ana Viktorija Pulljz 10-0 in the semis. She had earlier defeated Yangchen Wangmo of Bhutan 10-0 in the round of 16 battle before outclassing Erza Muminoviq of Kosovo in the quarterfinals.

A contingent of 46 athletes across 13 sports will be representing India at the prestigious event. India had only won two medals – one silver and one bronze – at the last Youth Olympics in 2014 at Nanjing, China.
